Whether it came originally as gray or repaint, who knows. I'd just keep it as it is - stepped IIIc (that step below the r/A lever) are hard to come by. I am guessing mine is just before they ran out of chromium and started to paint IIIc:s gray and ended up with yours! Camera looks identical to yours. I just checked mine and its a #382xxx, which I dated to 1942ish, and it is in chrome.
