The Leica III’s magnified rangefinder and the viewfinder are two separate windows. IIId was very rare with only 427 pieces produced in a 7 years’ run, meanwhile IIIc enjoyed an extended run until the post-war era. You can tell by checking the tint of the reflection off the lens. To put it precisely, IIId was the earliest IIIc which commenced production at the heat of WWII. Strange as mine has a serial that starts with a 4xxxxxx. I forgot to mention, its not easy to fake a Summitar lens and make it look identical. What watch collectors call "transitional" models. In my many years of collecting Leicas and other stuff, I learn that unless you have the factory log, most serial number ranges are approximate and you do get some outliers especially if close enough. Whether it came originally as gray or repaint, who knows. I'd just keep it as it is - stepped IIIc (that step below the r/A lever) are hard to come by. I am guessing mine is just before they ran out of chromium and started to paint IIIc:s gray and ended up with yours! Camera looks identical to yours. I just checked mine and its a #382xxx, which I dated to 1942ish, and it is in chrome.
